Our Mission
At Twenty First Century Herbs, giving back to nature is important to us, our business, and our customers. It's why we're doing our bit to respond to the climate crisis by partnering with Ecologi and committing to becoming a zero-carbon operation. It's no secret that we're on the edge of a climate emergency. By drastically reducing our carbon emissions, we can have the best chance of preventing the worst impacts of climate change. Reforestation is now a core part of our business model. Our partners will plant a tree in Madagascar for every order placed via our website, giving back to communities and the planet.
How Does Tree Planting Help the Environment?
Trees are essential for people, wildlife, and the environment. The world has lost one-third of its forests globally because of deforestation. Between 1990 and 2015, the world lost some 129 million hectares of forest – an area the size of South Africa. As human populations explode worldwide, the need for more land for food production and settlements grows. Ultimately, this means clearing forests and other habitats to make way for humanity. We depend on forests for our survival. After the ocean, forests are the world's largest stores of carbon. We are removing our planet's ability to fight back against the climate crisis by removing trees, which is disastrous for all life on earth. It's now widely recognised that tree planting is one of the best tools to fight climate change and prevent our temperatures from rising above 1.5C. Planting trees is also integral to stopping ecological collapse by restoring crucial habitats
BENEFITS
How We Help
Water
Trees play a crucial role in the global water cycle via transpiration - pulling water from the ground and releasing it into the atmosphere. Trees also reduce the risk of natural disasters. Their intricate root systems remove pollutants and slow down water's absorption into the soil. This process prevents harmful waterslide erosion and reduces the risk of over-saturation and flooding.
Climate
increasing carbon dioxide levels boosted by deforestation and fossil fuel combustion entrap heat in the atmosphere like a greenhouse. Trees counteract this by acting as carbon sinks, absorbing harmful greenhouse gases, offsetting carbon, and reducing the effects of climate change.
Air
Trees clean the air we breathe. Their leaves and bark absorb harmful pollutants and release clean oxygen. Trees can absorb up to 150kg of carbon dioxide per year, making the environment a healthier, safer place to live.
Who Are Ecologi?
Ecologi are our tree planting partner. They responsibly plant millions of trees a month on behalf of their partners, and we are proud to now be a part of that community. They have supported mangrove planting in Madagascar ever since its founding in 2019. It’s estimated that Ecologi’s global community will have funded the planting of 13 million mangrove trees during the entire project period. You can be a part of that by shopping with us.
Restoring Madagascar's Mangroves
Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot with more than 90% of its wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth. Yet sadly, over 90% of Madagascar's forests have been destroyed, impacting people living in extreme poverty and removing precious biodiversity. Whole mangrove estuaries are gone, leaving the bare earth to wash away into the sea and eliminating natural coastal defences. These mangrove forests are not only crucial carbon sinks, but they also provide habitats for a wide range of marine species.
What Are Mangroves?
Mangroves are a small coastal tree species found worldwide in the tropics and subtropics. They are exceptionally proficient at absorbing carbon and storing it underground in their extensive root systems. Carbon stored in mangrove forests is blue carbon because it is stored in a coastal environment. As well as their excellent carbon sequestration powers, mangroves provide exceptional flood and storm protection to the coastal area itself.
What Is Blue Carbon?
Blue carbon is carbon sequestered by the world's oceanic and coastal ecosystems, like mangroves, salt marshes and seagrasses. It's the process of sucking carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and locking it away in organic matter like plants. This means restoring blue carbon ecosystems, like mangrove forests, is a great solution to mitigate the climate crisis.
Who are Eden Restoration Projects?
Eden Restoration Projects are a non-profit based in Madagascar. Their mission is to support impoverished communities to become guardians of global forest restoration by providing fair-wage employment in return. Their mangrove restoration projects are located to the Northwest of the island on coastal land near Mahajanga. Eden hires local people from vulnerable communities to grow, plant and safeguard the mangrove trees to maturity. Their unique 'Employ to Plant' initiative ensures that funding goes beyond planting trees. Money is put in the pockets of local people, supporting their livelihoods and commitment to reforestation by investing in their future. This is all thanks to people like you shopping with businesses like ours, worldwide.
Thank You
By partnering with Ecologi and businesses around the world, Eden Restoration Projects has planted an area of roughly 600 hectares within this degraded coastal region. And it's growing every day. Partnered online purchases directly fund local communities to expand the area further along the coast. Shopping with us means you are creating jobs, protecting ecosystems, and mitigating climate change - on a massive scale. We only have one planet – let's restore it together. Every tree planted will positively impact nature, people, and our planet. When shopping with us online, you can feel positive that your purchases support a healthier future for life on Earth.
