Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the term given to describe a range of uncomfortable symptoms related to irregularities of the bowel and bowel movements. The symptoms experienced could be a result of imperfect digestive functions, a food intolerance or even stress.
Sufferers of Irritable Bowel Syndrome may have all or some of the following;
- Bowel discomfort/tenderness
- Stomach cramps
- Feeling bloated
They also may display some of the common indicators of stress such as anxiety, depression, a racing heart etc.
Some studies have suggested that many people who have Irritable Bowel Syndrome may actually have a low level food allergy. Some of the most frequent food causes are dairy, wheat and eggs, but caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes can also irritate the digestive system.
If a specific medical cause and solution cannot be found then there are some herbal remedies that may help to relieve some of the symptoms of IBS.
Herbs like marshmallow and meadowsweet may sooth the digestive system. Tonics made from peppermint and golden seal can act as stimulants, particularly if constipation is a problem, though eating a high fibre diet will also help.
Probiotics have also been show to help relive the symptoms.
Diarrhoea may be eased by the use of astringents like Sage but also strong black tea has been said to help if nothing else is available.
Bitter herbs have also been show to help.
If stress is an issue then consider using relaxing herbs such as Californian Poppy or Skullcap which can be taken in a number of forms. We do have a formula aimed at nerve / relaxation issues.
Some women may experience the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome just before their menstrual period, and the use of women herbs has been found to improve this in some people, as it can influence the hormones which are involved in menstrual cycle.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be an uncomfortable condition to live with. Using herbal remedies may help with some of the symptoms, but always talk with your doctor first. It is always worth getting checked for any other medical problems (such as a food intolerance) that may be causing the same symptoms.
